EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

*High School Diploma and at least five years of law enforcement experience as a certified police officer

*Previous experience as School Resource Officer preferred

*Possession of current State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Police Officer Certificate

*At least 24 years of age

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patrols and monitors facility areas and grounds on a consistent basis to prevent theft, vandalism, and illegal entry as well as unauthorized vehicles and illegal parking

Works to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact and positive relationships with students; Assists in conflict mediation efforts

Provides the faculty with technical assistance regarding school safety planning, crisis training, occupational safety, and overall school security to include personnel, information and facility

Enforce state codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures on school property

Conducts criminal investigations, and collects information, intelligence, and evidence regarding criminal violations on campus, presents investigative results and assists in prosecution.

Interrogates and detains unauthorized personnel

Files criminal charges for crimes committed on campus.

Writes reports and provides documentation of activities.

Maintains good rapport and liaison with faculty, law enforcement, judiciary, and community service agencies.

Designs and conducts classes related to crime prevention, drug education, law, ethics, and other related areas.

Make appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities or other governmental agencies

Exhibits high moral standards at all times and uses good judgment and discretion

Performs other tasks as specified by management

Qualifications:

All qualifications and standards as described in the the School Safety Personnel (SRO) section of the Mississippi Department of Education Mississippi School Safety Manual.

Reports to:

Superintendent of Schools

Job Goal:

The School Resource Officer (SRO) will work with and supervise students, staff, and administrators with regard to campus safety issues, promote safe and orderly schools, assist in investigations, and foster a sense of security on all campuses and offices within the district.  

Essential Functions:

  1. Patrols and monitors all areas of the facility on a consistent basis to prevent theft, vandalism, and illegal entry as well as unauthorized vehicles and illegal parking.

  2. Assists and provides guidance to principal and staff in the maintenance of a safe school environment.

  3. Provides the faculty with technical assistance regarding school safety planning, crisis training, occupational safety, and overall school security to include personnel, information, and all facilities.

  4. Designs and conducts classes related to crime prevention, drug education, law, ethics, and other related areas.

  5. Conducts limited criminal investigations under the supervision of a municipal or county law enforcement agency and collects information, intelligence, and evidence regarding criminal violations on campus and presents investigative results to the local law enforcement agency.

  6. Conducts staff training related to school safety policies and procedures.

  7. Enforces state statutes, district and individual school regulations, policies, and procedures as they apply; gives directions and information.

  8. Investigates reports of disturbances or suspicious circumstances.

  9. Recommends appropriate disciplinary measures in order to maintain a safe and secure school environment.

  10. Maintains records and makes reports as required.

  11. Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

  12. Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth.

  13. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.

  14. Maintains appropriate professional appearance.

  15. Demonstrates regular attendance and punctuality.
      

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Works with directors, administrators, coaches, and teaching staff to integrate security services and provide the most efficient use of resources.

  2. Participates in and completes the approved district Staff Development Program.

  3. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Superintendent of Schools may from time to time assign.

Evaluation:

Performance of the individual holding this job will be evaluated by this position’s immediate supervisor.

A formal evaluation will be performed annually for means of determining the re-hiring/termination at this position.  

Evaluations may be done several times throughout the year at the discretion of this position’s immediate supervisor. 

 

Job Specifics for School Resource Officer:

Office/Room Location: Poplarville Upper Elementary

Scope of Work: District-wide security, safety, training, investigating, and consultation.

Smartphone: The SRO is required to have a cell phone for use in communicating with the Superintendent of Schools, directors, and district administrators.

Payscale: This position is based on a twelve-month year agreement.  Compensation and work year to be established by the Superintendent and approved by the Board of Trustees on an annual basis.  This position is “At Will.”
